Foreign direct investment has a beneficial effect on the economy of any country. In Bulgaria, they are an important source of growth, which creates conditions for a stable and sustainable economy. In the recipient country, they provide new jobs and positively influence the labour market, while increasing competitiveness and contributing to the transfer of know-how, which in turn raises living standards in the country.
According to the Bulgarian National Bank’s preliminary data, the net flow of direct investments in the country for the period January – June 2023 is positive and amounts to EUR 1 796.4 million (1.9% of GDP). This marks an increase of EUR 880.2 million (96.1%) compared to that for January – June 2022.
Who are the biggest investors by country in Bulgaria?
The largest net direct investment inflows in Bulgaria for January – June 2023 were from the Netherlands (EUR 508.9 million), Austria (EUR 231.5 million) and Belgium (EUR 203 million).
The total amount of foreign direct investment in Bulgaria for the period from 1999 to January-March (first quarter of 2023) amounts to EUR 56 593.9 million.
